Hi there, how's tricks?

The date in the title refers to the end of the week just passed. And what a week it's been.

Writing

I began last week with a post from Nero's Notes about Foglietto, a beautiful idea from France - one that is slipping quietly away.

Little Slips
Effortless organisation. That’s what I want. A system that’s instinctive, forgiving and easy on the eye. That’s not too much to ask for, is it? No? While we’re here, I’d also like extendibility and expandability. A system that can grow with my needs.

Then - my exploration of applications for writing. What's out there for a recovering Apple fanboi?

Writing Applications
However, the world is far from perfect, so I’ve accepted that a little copy and paste is often much less hassle than seeking perfection (or obvious functionality that the biggest companies in the world can’t be bothered to do...sorry. FOCUS!)

Then, at the weekend, I wrote a little about how I'm feeling. This one is part self-therapy and part despair at America's approach to Geo-politics; don't say I didn't warn you.

Mental Health
Now, all Europeans look at images of Putin, shiver and hold our loved ones close. We look to the West and see haughty disinterest. Defence spending is increasing in all European countries. Germany will once again set its factories to building arms.

With Musk blowing up the engines of government, Hesketh dismantling the military and Trump smashing alliances and the economy, will there be anything left? Oh, and what's the point of Congress? He may as well just disband it.

Shopping

Joy of joys - I have done absolutely no online shopping this week. I have started thinking about reducing my dependence on American goods though. So this week, I'll be checking out this alternative to Microsoft Office and this Amazon competitor. Would I be able to use Linux instead of Windows or Mac? I'm not sure. In truth, it's astonishing that I'm even thinking about it.

Surfing

Just as I was feeling overwhelemed and depressed by the tsunami of news, I received an e-mail advising on that very subject. Imperfectionist by Oliver Burkeman is a superb newsletter. I've linked to the sign up page, but if you want the actual edition, it's here.

Have a fabulous week.

Tinkety-tonk, old fruits and down with the Nazis.

PS

Posts are not arriving individually to your e-mail. Instead, they arrive in this newsletter as a digest. If you're a paid member, the posts appear in Slack as soon as they are published - and anyone can, of course, have them pop up in your RSS reader of choice. Just add RSS to the end of the URL. I recommend Reader by Readwise.
